Are we as individuals, or as a whole society, relying on illusions, or even planting them ourselves?
The world population is growing, unlike the world´s resources. Today, more than ever, we need a food production and consumption system that will not only provide enough nutrition for a seven and a half billion population, but will also preserve resources for further generations. However, the long-term functionality of the current agricultural system is an illusion. An illusion of sustainability, stability, responsibility and fairness. An illusion of an endless harvest.
The amount of natural resources our planet can restore in one year is being exhausted in August, the vast fairy tale fields of one crop are in reality devastating for the soil and biodiversity, and the sense of proximity to our food that our supermarkets create successfully conceal the fact that we are increasingly depersonalized from food production.
Let´s search for the interfaces between reality and illusion. Let us not feed a system that is broken. By following ecological principles in agriculture and consumption, and by re-finding our relationship with food, we will ensure a long-term sustainable food system, without which we will not be able to make it in the future. Responsible alternatives already exist; let's build our future upon them!
The World on a Plate film festival is organized by the independent think tank Glopolis. Local screenings and accompanying events are spreading throughout the Czech Republic thanks to partner organizations and individuals. You can also get involved!
